Allot of Fun...
Allot of Fun...
Like any good story, Wolverley Allotment Society's revolves around a plot - or in this case, the search for one!
Having retired to the small village of around 2000 people in Worcestershire, local resident Jenny Bull was keen to put her green fingers to use in her new, leafy surroundings.
However, having found there to be a lack of available allotments in the village, Jenny - alongside other residents keen to secure a space for growing - took the cause by the horns, dedicating five years of hard work and perseverance to realise her ambition.
Finally having secured land from the council, members also proceeded to register the organisation as a charity, and applied for funding to People's Postcode Trust in 2014.
Thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, the group were awarded £13,431 in Q3 of last year's Small Grantsprogramme. They then set to work - firstly on improving access to the site.
Now a thriving community allotment of wild flowers, fruit, vegetables and raised beds, the space has also become a community hub for other local groups - including the local Women's Institute and children from the village primary school.
The seeds are now also being sown a community orchard with a "sponsor-a-tree" program, while there is also a buzz around plans for beehives,
Joe Ray, Trust Manager of People's Posctode Trust, said "Through People's Postcode Lottery, players are helping to support grass-roots projects like Jenny's across England, Scotland and Wales".
In addition, the group have recently set up a website for information and updates regarding the allotments, which can be accessed here.
Since its inception in 2009, the Small Grants program has awarded over £9m of funding to more than 1400 projects throughout Great Britain.
People’s Postcode Lottery is a charity lottery, where players play with their postcodes to win cash prizes while raising money for good causes. As a charity lottery, 50p from every £2 ticket goes to support charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally. Through People’s Postcode Trust, players of People’s Postcode Lottery support local communities across Great Britain so the money raised stays local to players.Return to news archive
