Kick Off At Cruyff Court

2 September 2012

Ledley KingOn Tuesday, Ledley King, former captain of Tottenham Hotspur, joined the Dutch Paralympic 7-a-side football squad to open a brand new Cruyff Court Tottenham Hotspur.

The court will provide a multi-use games area for young people living at the heart of London's regeneration drive, following last year's riots.

A Cruyff Court is a public sports ground which provides a safe play area for local children and young people.

Dutch charity, the Johan Cruyff Foundation, joined forces with Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Haringey Council and People's Postcode Lottery to complete the project on the Ferry Lane Estate.

People's Postcode Trust awarded £15,000 to provide benches in the spectator area, and fresh water and drainage in the changing rooms.

Cruyff Court Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the art facilities, including a third generation (3G) astroturf pitch, basketball and tennis courts, adapted so that people with disabilities can use them too.

Grant Cornwell MBE, Chief Executive, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, has called the "fantastic new facility a major boost for the area."

Carole Thate, director of the Johan Cruyff Foundation, particularly welcomed the co-operation of partners, including People's Postcode Trust, saying, "At Johan Cruyff Foundation, we work with a relatively small team but by working with third parties, we are able to achieve great results. This court in London is a nice example of these collaborations."

The Foundation was set up "to get young people moving" by building public playgrounds which give children back their play areas, supporting sports projects for children with disabilities and organising sporting events.

The charity has already completed a similar project in Islington, in partnership with the local council and Arsenal Football Club.

In Haringey, local people hope that - as well as improving sports facilities and opportunities for children and young people - Cruyff Court Tottenham Hotspur will act as a focal point for social inclusion projects and bring the community together.
