Helping survivors of domestic abuse in Hertford
Future Living Hertford is a volunteer led charity providing psycho social support services, training, volunteering and work opportunities for those in recovery from addictions and domestic abuse.
They applied to People’s Postcode Trust to continue the ‘Monica Training’ project, a program for survivors of domestic abuse. With input from client and professionals the program has evolved within a catering framework, taking clients from no skills to accredited kitchen training. In addition, there would be opportunities to volunteer and practice those skills within the organisation’s own community cafe hub and to mentor future clients.
The project was incredibly successful with 37 women training in kitchen hygiene skills, café management, cookery skills and baking. These achievements enabled them to learn team building skills. By the end of the course each client who felt able had the opportunity to lead the team.
Furthermore 21 people have obtained paid employment either through the project partners in the community or through access to the onsite jobsite (in partnership with the DWP) obtaining a variety of roles in the community. 12 have undertaken volunteering roles in this industry including helping with our onsite café which they consider 'their own', and catering for events with other clients, team members and peers at the charity.
